The Kagero-class destroyers were the first to be planned after the expiration of the Naval Disarmament Treaty, representing the pinnacle of fleet-type destroyer design. Yukikaze, the eighth ship of the class, was completed in January 1940. Throughout the Pacific War, she participated in nearly every major operation—the Battle of Midway, Guadalcanal, the Philippine Sea, and Leyte Gulf—as well as numerous convoy and transport missions. Despite constant engagement on the front lines, she miraculously survived the war with little damage, earning her the nickname “the unsinkable destroyer.”

Originally outfitted with three twin-mounted 12.7 cm guns and two quadruple 61 cm torpedo launchers, Yukikaze’s armaments evolved during the war. Her No. 2 main gun was removed, anti-aircraft capabilities were strengthened, and radar systems were installed, giving her a more aggressive appearance than her original sleek silhouette. In April 1945, she took part in Operation Ten-Go as an escort to the battleship Yamato, rescuing many survivors after the operation before returning safely to port. After Japan’s surrender, she served as a special transport ship, repatriating soldiers and civilians. Later, she was transferred to the Republic of China as part of war reparations and remained in service until the early 1960s.

This plastic model kit faithfully recreates Yukikaze as she appeared in April 1945, during her final major mission escorting Yamato—a fitting tribute to one of the most iconic and resilient destroyers of the Pacific War.
