When the Battle of Britain began, the Hawker Hurricane was the largest fighter aircraft in the British Air Force. Gradually, it proved to be an indispensable and very effective aircraft on all fronts of World War II. It was considered a very durable and reliable machine ideal for attacks on ground targets, but it was undoubtedly its defensive role during the Battle of Britain, in which it gained a reputation as one of the best warplanes in the world.

He entered service with the 111th Squadron in December 1937. The original, cloth-covered wings were replaced by metal in 1939. In the Battle of Britain, the Air Force headquarters had an average of 1326 Hurricanes, compared to 957 Spitfires. It was Hurricane that commanded Nicolson as the only RAF fighter to cross the Victoria Cross after he managed to shoot down an enemy Messerschmitt Bf110 while his own plane was on fire.

After the Battle of Britain, the Hurricane also served in the Far East, as well as on the Eastern Front and the Desert War.
