back, exactly as it was back then!
At the 2nd Electric Off-Road Vehicle World Championship in the UK in 1987, the prototype Optima Mid took 5 out of 10 places in the 4WD class A-main final race. The Optima Mid was then put on the market and competed in races around the world. The Turbo Optima Mid Special, the final version of the Optima Mid, was released in 1988, and the limited edition was so popular that it quickly sold out. For this reason, the Turbo Optima Mid Special, which is also called a legendary car by some, will be revived in 2025 as the 18th installment of the Kyosho Vintage Series. The original Turbo Optima Mid Special has a wheelbase that is 18mm longer than the Optima Mid, which provides even greater high-speed stability and improved cornering speed.
The main chassis, which is compatible with the split battery, uses a hybrid carbon plate with FRP sandwiched between carbon, achieving both moderate flexibility and high rigidity. The belt and belt cover are also exclusive to the Turbo Optima Mid Special, and the body was also newly manufactured to match the chassis. The reissued Turbo Optima Mid Special retains these features, and has been updated to accommodate modern power sources and R/C mechanisms.
Parts that were previously optional are now standard, and some parts have been newly manufactured for the Turbo Optima Mid Special. Also, don't miss out on the fact that this reissue is not a limited production, but a regular catalog model. The Turbo Optima Mid Special, which is being reissued on modern circuits, is an attractive model that will fulfill the wishes of all those who once owned the original model, those who were unable to get their hands on it because it was a limited production item, and those who want to try driving the final form of the Optima for the first time.
- The 18th model in the Kyosho Vintage Series. This legendary car was released in limited quantities in 1988 and quickly sold out, but it has been reproduced exactly as it was in the old days.
- Eight new parts have been produced for the Turbo Optima Mid Special.
- While respecting the original design, it has also been updated to accommodate modern R/C mechanisms and power sources.
- Uses a belt-type 4WD system that is highly efficient and also effective in improving driving stability. You can enjoy stress-free driving on everything from R/C circuits to dirt.
- Uses a 48-pitch pinion and spur gear. The existing 82T spur gear for the Ultima RB is used, and optional 78T/80T spur gears can also be installed.
- Equipped with a reinforced slipper clutch that can be used with powerful motors and batteries. Settings can be changed by replacing the dual slipper seat for the Ultima RB.
- Equipped with a holder that can accommodate batteries of various shapes. By cutting part of the main chassis, it is possible to install nickel-metal hydride and nickel-cadmium batteries separately on the left and right sides.
- The reinforced nylon rear wing, which combines moderate flexibility and strength, is the same as the Optima Mid that was previously reissued. You can change the settings by replacing it with a Scorpion-type rear wing.
- The rear hub carrier allows you to choose from three toe angles: 0°, 1°, and 2° by replacing the plastic bushings.
- Aluminum hexagonal wheel hubs that can be securely fixed with screw pins.
- The drive system is fully ball-bearing, achieving high rotational efficiency.
- The packaging is a blister pack inspired by the original. The joy of those days is revived.
- Tuning up is also possible with a wide range of optional parts. It goes beyond the scope of a simple reissue model and can be enjoyed as a current model.
The basic design is the same as the Turbo Optima Mid Special that appeared in 1988, but the chassis has a longer wheelbase compared to the standard Optima Mid, which is effective in improving driving stability.
The hybrid carbon main chassis, which is made by sandwiching FRP between carbon, has the characteristic of being able to bend appropriately in response to the load during driving. It provides the driver with straightforward maneuverability. It also has a slot reminiscent of the original that can accommodate a split battery.
To coincide with the relaunch of the Turbo Optima Mid Special, a new narrow-type 50mm front tire and wheel have been produced. The wheel is a yellow resin molded product with the same design as the existing rear wheel, and the tire has a block pattern that provides excellent grip.
Gold anodized oil shocks, reminiscent of the pressure dampers that were standard on Kyosho high-end models from the 1980s, are standard equipment. The front and rear springs are medium-hard type, providing straightforward controllability.
The aluminum parts are finished in Kyosho's gunmetal works color, which was not available on the commercially available model in 1988. The shock (damper) stays are made of black FRP plates.
The front axle is equipped with a universal swing shaft as standard, which reduces drive loss and reduces the feeling of stalling when cornering, while also preventing the risk of it coming off while driving.
A belt cover to protect the drive belt from sand and pebbles has also been newly manufactured in accordance with the extension of the wheelbase. It has high dust-proofing ability and is highly accurate, making it easy to install on the upper deck.
The upper suspension arms and steering rods are turnbuckle type, allowing for quick and stepless length adjustments, enabling quick setting changes.
By replacing the bushings, the rear hub carrier (upright) can be set to three different toe angles: 0, 1, and 2 degrees. In addition to being easy to change settings, it can also be used for a wide range of road conditions.
