The Royal Hospital Ship Britannic, belonging to the White Star Line, was one of the White Star Line's Olympic-class liners and a sister ship to the Olympic and Titanic.

Launched before the start of World War I, the Britannic lay in a Belfast shipyard for several months until 1915, when it was used as a hospital ship to transport wounded soldiers and replenish supplies. At 8:00 AM on November 21, 1916, it was sighted by the German submarine U-73 in the waters off the Greek island of Kea and subsequently torpedoed. However, due to poor damage control and disorganized crew management, the lifeboats being lowered became sucked into the Britannic's propeller, damaging it and causing it to run aground and sink. Of the thirty fatalities in the sinking, only five were due to drowning.
